The adventure traveler or naturalist will find here a great diversity of ecosystems -mountains and thick forests, swamplands, flora and fauna that are both Caribbean and South American.
There are few places in the world where 430 species of birds can be seen in such a small area, and many of them are unique, very rare, or of particular interest. Oilbird, the Scarlet Ibis, the Copper-Rumped Hummingbird, the rare white-tailed Sabrewing Hummingbird and the Violaceous Trogon.
Trinidad is one of the most important leather-back sea turtle nesting sights in the world. During peak season some beaches report up to 300 nesting leatherbacks in a single night. It's estimated that approximately 20 percent of the world's leather-back sea turtle population is of Trinidadian ancestry. From the easily accessed beaches of Maracas, Las Cuevas, and Blanchisseuse to the more secluded beaches of Paria, Pitit Tacarib, Grande Tacarib and Madamas on the North Coast.
There are over 700 different orchid species, including Renanthera, Arachnis and hybrids; Vanda; Ascocenda; Phalaenopsis: Dendrobium; Cattleya; Oncidium.
The Asa Wright Nature Centre, just north of Arima, is an excellent hiking destination. A 2 1/2 hour walk brings you to the 700 acres of forest and its many trains, pools for swimming and abundance of flora and fauna. Tamana Peak is another hiking destination.
